Russell, KS Area Attractions
In the Russell area you will find clean air, museums, antique stores, military forts, historic trails, rodeos, festivals, unique geological formations, large lakes, wide open spaces, world famous sunsets and some of the best hunting and fishing in the nation.
The jewel of Russell County is Wilson Lake, a 9100 acre lake with over 100 miles of beautiful shoreline. It is the “Clearest Lake in Kansas” and considered to be a premier striped bass and smallmouth bass lake. Wilson Lake is an oasis in the dry prairies of Western Kansas. The waters which flow into Wilson Lake have many unique properties because of the limestone through which they flow. The lake has high salt content which allows it to support some types of fish, such as the striped bass, which are native to the ocean. Limestone also filters the waters, making Wilson the clearest lake in Kansas, and a great location for scuba diving and other water sports. Russell County has some of the best hunting that Kansas has to offer! Area hunting includes trophy deer, pheasant, quail, duck, goose, and turkey on public land or by guided hunts.
Russell also has a 9-hole municipal golf course. This well-maintained course has frequently watered, plush fairways. In addition, many trees line the fairways and frame the greens. Water hazards come into play on five holes, plus four greens are guarded by greenside sand bunkers. The course features 3,141 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36. The course rating is 70.0 and it has a slope rating of 120.
